Kitchen Whiz

Kitchen Whiz, otherwise known as K-W, is made out of things you would find in the kitchen. The skirt is made of lots of plastic bags, magazine strips, toilet rolls and bottle tops. The cape is made out of tea towels, corks and is sewed together with old red string. The last part of my outfit was the hat. It was made out of plastic spoons, a hanging basket, buttons, ribbons, a small mat that you make sushi with, and lots and lots of tin foil. I hope you like my outfit!!!

Trash to Fashion-Electric Speed

This picture is an outfit that Josh and Niko made and is called Electric Speed. First, we made our mask by finding left over material and hand-sewing elastic to one side of the material so it would stay in place.Secondly, we designed our shoes by finding two pieces of carpet, then sewing both sides together and cutting a hole in the middle to put feet in. Thirdly we made our cape by stitching our logo - the letters ES on material. We put a hole in the material to make a cape. The t-shirt and shorts were easy because we just had to put our logo on. The gun was made out of toilet paper rolls and a tissue box.

THE KILLER SNAKE

The killer snake is a very dangerous villain who will attack you without a second thought. His shirt is made from a cut up shirt and bits of fabric and some round cardboard. His crown is made of a scrum hat and the mask is some foamy material and fabric. The gun is a tissue box and some cones, hotglue gunned together. The shoes consist of carpet and a strap.

Space Girl

Space Girl is a 12 year old girl with superpowers. She spends most of her time fighting evil aliens.
Her costume is made out of old black fabric, sparkly paper, an old headband and wool.

Solar Plexis

I made this costume by knitting plastic mattress cover, rope, lace, car seat cover, stockings, fabric, plastic aprons and wool. I stitched the sides together with industrial rope and yellow cotton, I also lined the collar with packaging plaited together then stitched on to the shirt. The sun in the middle is made of the bottom of a pie plate and a rosette and buttons stitched on. Then I stitched it onto the shirt. The pants are made out of packaging, with materials stitched on and the cape is a yellow plastic bag.

Sweet Dream Villain

I spent a lot of time making this outfit. My creative skills really helped me in the process.

Volcanic Clipper

Our trash to fashion outfit was made out of black fabric, red fabric, cotton, lots of thread and paper clips and more. Our outfit was called Volcanic Clipper on the front of the t shirt there are initials V for Volcanic and C for Clipper. Ryan and I had a hard time making our gloves because we had to sew and stitch paperclips onto the gloves. Also our cape was made out of a green and blue fabric with our initials stitched on.

Trash To Fashion

Max Bot is an extremely evil robot with two powerful blaster guns as its only weapons. This incredibly dangerous robot is made out of silver and gold paper, boxes, bottles, cups, straws and cans. This is a mixture that makes a very deadly robot.

Don't forgot to look out for the warnings!

Bottle Top Boy

In our outfit we used a lot of bottle tops probably because our superhero is called Bottle Top Boy. I think our outfit was a great success. If we could improve on something I think it would be the mask because we cut the eye holes in the wrong place. The stitching could also have been better

Day Two of Creating

What hard workers room 28 are. Over the last 2 days their ideas have come together really well and it has been wonderful to watch them support each other.

We have appreciated the assistance of parents who have been able to drop by. Thank you.

The morning block on Friday will be used for further making then we will see how much more time is required next week.

Trash to Fashion

We are putting aside Wednesday and Thursday for creating and making our outfits.

The children have some ambitious plans and they will be guided to work on a piece at a time... the mask or hat, the top, a belt etc.

Although many children are choosing to design and therefore create an individual outfit, they will assist each other as well.

If any parents have a spare hour on either one of these days you would be very welcome to drop by and lend a hand.

After these two days we will reassess where we are up to and decide how much more time we need to set aside.

We will be taking photographs of children at work so we can share our progress.

Showing our Photo Story Skills

Basic Facts

Great news children and parents of Room 28.
I have just finished recording the results of our latest 50/50/50 addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tests and I feel very proud of you because there has been considerable improvement.

I look forward to sharing your results with you tomorrow.

At our recent conferences many of you set basic fact goals. The work you have done on your own and with the support of your parents has made a difference.

Measurement

To begin our measurement unit we practised estimating.
Each container had a different product in it...water, quinoa, sand, rolled oats, macaroni, dried green peas, barley or biscats. The containers were the same size and for our first estimation we based our judgement on what we knew about the product.
Tomorrow we will balance the containers in our hands and make a more informed estimation.
Which product do you think is lightest?

Trash to Fashion

This outfit which is being modelled was part of the motivation for our Trash to Fashion Unit.  Although it was made by a very skilled adult it is amazing for us to see what can be made from plastic bags!

Next week is our researching and designing phase ready for making our own garments. Each of you now have your own portfolio with very specific instructions. Over the term you will have been gathering items to use and Mrs McConnell has shared with us the range of items she has collected from various Resource Centres.

Wearable Newspaper

Each group of four created an outfit for their model. Newspaper, sellotape, masking tape and some sewing combined to make an interesting mix. The requirement was to make head wear, a top and a skirt/ pants. We couldn't identify who made the best gear however there were many reasons why certain parts of each model's clothing stood out.

Two of the models were so proud of their outfits they ventured out the door in them. Did they arrive home in tact?

Get Out of the Car and Fill the Jar

This initiative by Travel Wise has been going in our school throughout the term.
Mrs McConnell with the assistance of Room 28 have been collating the data each week and formulating the graphs to show who is making the most effort to keep themselves fit as well as being kind to our environment.
Here are a couple of examples of the published graphs.

Dive in and Read

Together we are enjoying the experience of reading the series published in The New Zealand Herald, Cody's Unexpected Catch. We have discovered a lot about whitebait and reflected on the way we read body language. Lots of new vocabulary has been introduced and discussed as we have honed our reciprocal reading techniques. Predicting based on what we think rather than reading on to find out the answer has been challenging but many children are thinking carefully and justifying their predictions.
