How did they do it?

Co-operative Problems

Oh, the sound of silence...Today each group of children had a set of shapes and their task was to create five squares out of the pieces, but there were specific rules to be followed.

• no single person could have more than five pieces in front of them
• children could only give away pieces, they couldn't take pieces
• no talking or body language was allowed

Read Aloud

Over the last week and a half we have been entertained by each child in the class as they have shared their chosen text.
It was great that the children selected their passage carefully, introduced it appropriately and read confidently and with expression.

Art Exhibition

Children who have grandparents coming to school tomorrow will be able to take them through the exhibition.

Read Aloud Task Room 28

This is further information about our read aloud task as discussed at school and included on the last Home Learning sheet.

Learning intention: we are learning to read a self-selected excerpt from a book aloud to entertain an audience of our peers.

Suggested process
• Select a text you enjoy reading.
• Practise reading different excerpts out loud until you have a piece you feel comfortable with and that takes you between 1 and 2 minutes to present.
• Choose a place to stop that either creates an air of suspense or completes that section of the story.
• Plan a brief introduction to your selection which gives some background information.
• Practise many times, so you are very familiar with the vocabulary, remembering to use appropriate expression and pace.

This 'read aloud' presentation will be given by each member of the class in Week 2 or 3, Term 4

Where did the term go?

Ten weeks have whizzed by and we are about to embark on two weeks of holiday before the final term!

This week all the 3-D athletes have been labelled, sprayed with polyurethane and photographed ready for being presented at the Art Exhibition in week two next term.

Most children have almost completed their author presentation. It is pleasing to see the range of ideas that have been used to show the information.

Today we discussed our environmental questions and stressed the importance of writing subsidiary questions to help with scaffolding the information required to answer their big question. Because the last few weeks have been very busy we are still at the research stage and if the children have time over the holidays to gather any further information that would be great. Next term we will discuss presentation ideas before publishing.

Creating tangrams and then manipulating them to form representations of animals and other objects has been fun and challenging during our ICT time. Look out for these in our next portfolios.

The foldouts related to the novel study that many of you viewed at the conferences are now on display and the children can now spend time reading each others' interpretations of the plot.

Another ICT task completed this week has been the making of a person in the Paint program and the adding of a speech or thought bubble containing the next learning goal that was decided during the conferences. These are also on display.

Disco Dancing

Field Day Reflections

The B rugby team had a lot of fun through out the day even though we lost every game!!! We improved through out the day and I scored a try.

The soccer A team had a brilliant time at field day winning two, tying two and losing two placing us seventh on the table.
Max

The soccer C team had a fantastic, fun day, even though we lost all of our games! We definitely improved through out the day. The parents were very supportive the whole time and we are very thankful for them.

The rugby A team came third at the field day, it was a huge achievement because we were missing four of our players to weight and injuries, and I scored seven tries!!

The soccer B team won all their pool games (1-0, 1-0, 2-0), but against St Kentigern, in the quarter finals, we lost 3-0. Cameron played brilliantly as a defender and saved many goals.

Three-Way Conferences

Mrs McConnell and Mrs Jamieson are very proud of the way the children in room 28 contributed to the interviews we held this week. It was a new experience for all of us and listening to the way you talked about your learning to your parents we know they too were proud of you.

The Drying Room

'The athletes' had a new layer of papier mache two weeks ago and have spent the time since then in the drying room. A further smoother layer was applied on Thursday and the models are now resting again.

Hyperbole Examples

Our learning intention for writing was:
To recognise hyperbole and learn to write examples of hyperbole.

We had lots of fun sketching our ideas and writing hyperbole to match.

Our next learning step is to find opportunities to include relevant hyperbole in our writing.

Progress On Our Athletes

Our Commonwealth Games athletes are starting to take shape. Wires were wrapped with newsprint, the figure bent into shape, nailed to a board and the now the papier mache stage has begun...

Room 28 Speech Presentations

Over the last 3 weeks the children have been working on writing their speeches. In the initial stages the speech was planned out on a graphic organiser. Deciding on what to persuade their audience about and the reasons that justified their points of view were recorded. Facts or examples to explain each point of view were noted.

The next stage was to write, which has been done in class over many writing sessions. Using extra information gathered through research, as part of Home Learning, ideas were expanded and justified with facts.

Today the children have brought home their speech drafts which they now need to practise (some children have a little work to do to complete their speeches so they are closer to the required 3 minute expectation). As they do so it is important they think of all the points we have discussed that are important when presenting a speech. A copy of the speech marking sheet will come home before the end of the week so parents and children can discuss the progress being made towards the success criteria.

All speeches (or cue cards) are required back at school on Monday so the children can practise with a buddy at school and receive peer feedback.

Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 are presentation days at school for our class so cue cards will definitely be needed at school.

Art Exhibition

We have started our piece of art for the art exhibition that is being held in Week 2 of Term 4.The students are creating papier mache figurines of athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games.These images show the beginning of our art journey, we explored body proportions and how athletes move.

Book Week

This week all Room 28 children are encouraged to practise reading their chosen picture book at home. While practising please think about questions you can ask your buddy. Later in the week you will share this reading with your buddy.
